What makes a great Content Management System?

By Matt Stringer 31st October 2018

If you’ve taken a look through any of our client case studies, you may have seen us mention the acronym CMS.

We know we promised to steer clear from technical acronyms but in this instance, a CMS stands for a Content Management System – this is the brains behind your website. This is the area which gives website administrators (most likely your marketing department) the ability to manage and update your site’s content.

When you’re planning a new website, the first thing you need to think about is what CMS to use. In plain speaking terms, how functional do you need your website to be? There are literally hundreds of ready-made content management systems available to choose from which can sometimes make it harder to find the right answer. After all, with so much choice, how do you know which one to pick?

Let’s break it down and simplify some of the options.

Choosing a Content Management System – key considerations.

There are so many variations to consider that we’ll only provide a quick overview here but if you have any questions then please feel free to pick up the phone and give us a call. We promise we’re a friendly bunch and we’re always happy to answer your questions!

Things you should consider include:

  • How easy to use is the content management system? If you’re a large organisation, chances are the responsibility of updating your website is for more than just one person. If you have a whole marketing team involved, you may need to account for different skill levels, ranging from the office apprentice up to the Marketing Director
  • Does the content management system have easy to understand SEO functionality? Can you edit the meta data of individual pages or change the URLs to something a bit ‘friendlier?’ You want to be able to manage your SEO activities as easily as possible so in our opinion this is a vital part to be investigated before you make your choice.
  • Can you make simple changes as well as revert back to previous versions of a page? It’s worth investigating to see if any changes are trackable.
  • How time efficient is the system? You may wish to be able to upload multiple images in one go or edit multiple forms and log responses. If you find managing the backend of your website a chore then you’re likely not using the right one for your business needs.
  • We know your IT team will definitely want to know if the system is web-based. If you only need access to a web browser then it’s usually a lot more efficient – plus you can gain remote access much easier, perfect for those who enjoy working from home.
  • What are the costs – are there any initial one-off costs or ongoing costs which need to be factored in? You may also need to consider whether you need to pay a licence fee – if you have a set budget to stick to then it’s worth taking these into account.

Choosing a custom CMS is a Doddle!

If you’re looking for something a little more unique, then why not consider investing in a bespoke Content Management System? The great thing about a personalised CMS is that it’s designed solely with your business in mind – it really would be the heart and soul of your website.

But that sounds scarily expensive we hear you cry! Not necessarily – at SimpleClick, the clever clogs in our development team have created “Doddle” which is our own personal CMS.

Doddle is the perfect solution for when an ‘off the shelf’ product simply won’t do the job you need it to do. Having total control over it means that we can develop new modules and functionality when you need them. Perhaps you need your website to integrate with existing software, or maybe you’re scared of being caught out by cyber-hackers.

Whatever your reasons, giving you the perfect website really is a Doddle!
