SimpleClick's review of the year

By Richard Jennis 24th December 2020

2020 has been a challenging and unique year for businesses across the world. SimpleClick director, Richard Jennis, reflects on the year and picks some of his highlights.

2020 marks SimpleClick’s 12th anniversary. It’s been a tricky one (for obvious reasons), so I’m pleased that we’ve still managed to secure some new business and take on new clients this year - we’ve recently partnered with local charity Ipswich Housing Action Group (ihAg), which provides housing, money, debt advice and support for those at risk of homelessness, on a project to redevelop their website.

One success for SimpleClick in 2020 was winning tenders with clients we’ve never met before, which for me really proves the strength of Doddle (our bespoke content management system). Giving presentations via video calls rather than in person has been odd, yet we have successfully managed to communicate the message of how much SimpleClick invests in the process of partnering with our clients and shown where our value lies.

One of our biggest projects of the year was working with Waller Transport Services on a brand new tracking application; an ambitious undertaking which required bespoke software development to create a unique app tailored exactly to the client’s needs. We were over the moon to successfully deliver this project for Waller.

I’m really pleased that SimpleClick has kept our excellent team of staff intact and retained key staff members despite the challenges thrown at the company by Covid-19. I’m extremely proud of the way the team have handled themselves in 2020. Their attitude has been supportive and positive throughout and I felt particularly appreciative during this difficult time to have such a strong, committed group of individuals working for SimpleClick.

Unfortunately, I do have to announce the departure of Director Claire Thorpe who is leaving us at the end of the year to pursue a new career outside the tech industry. Claire has been with SimpleClick for 10 years and I have loved working with her throughout this period. She will be missed, but we wish her all the very best for her new role and really do thank her for all she has done for the company. It’s partly down to Claire that SimpleClick started this decade in such a strong position. I’m sure we will continue to build on this in the new year.

SimpleClick team working from home

The biggest change for SimpleClick in 2020, as with many UK businesses, was the switch to all employees working from home rather than in our offices. Luckily our company culture includes a flexible approach to working so most staff members already had the technology set up they needed to work remotely. While meetings were more difficult via video calls rather than face to face, the team stepped up to the challenge, using screen sharing functions to work collaboratively on projects.

I personally found working from home challenging at times, but it was fantastic to see the SimpleClick team adapt to a new way of working. We used Slack instant messaging service to keep in touch throughout the working day which helped us to serve our clients by being agile and responsive. The way SimpleClick has continued to support its customers is one of the things I’m most proud of this year.

You may know that SimpleClick launched Do Good networking events at the beginning of last year. These monthly events provide a way for local businesspeople to give their time to help local charities while making professional connections. We were disappointed to have to cancel most events this year due to social distancing restrictions relating to the virus. Thankfully, we were able to hold events outdoors in September and October to support the Ipswich charities Emmaus Suffolk and ActivLives. We hope to be able to hold more of these important events next year.

It’s been a difficult year for businesses in Suffolk and it’s fair to say we are probably all looking forward to it coming to a close! I have found it hard seeing local businesses and customers impacted negative by Covid-19. At SimpleClick, we are hoping 2021 will be a year of recovery and a fresh start. Thank you to all our fantastic customers; we love working with you and will see you (hopefully face to face!) next year.

SimpleClick wishes everyone a great Christmas and a Happy New Year.
