Last week (6th and 7th October 2022), Jules and Naomi attended BrightonSEO in person for the first time.

Having previously had their tickets rescheduled during the pandemic lockdowns and then attending events online since, this was the chance to experience the event as it was intended. After a hilarious opening video, mainly focused on the dangers of the local seagull population, two days of talks began covering a breadth of digital search marketing and related topics.

Our BrightonSEO highlights

Highlights of our time in Brighton were:

  • Afternoon ice creams/sorbets from the vintage ice cream van in Auditorium 1
  • Morris dancers welcoming us on Day 2
  • A giant seagull mascot
  • Sampling local restaurants for dinner
  • Views of the sea and the pier from our accommodation
  • Making new connections

We packed in a lot of talks across the 2 days, covering on-site optimisation, auditing, data analysis, indexing, social media, content strategy, Google Analytics 4, accessibility and UX.

Key takeaways

Our key takeaways from the event were:

  • TikTok, TikTok, TikTok. TikTok as a search engine, TikTok for influencer marketing, TikTok for engaging with your audience.
  • Content cannot NOT bring value if it gets traffic and talks about your product/service.
  • When optimising, don’t let perfect be the enemy of good enough - there is likely to be compromise and trade offs along the way.
  • Reasons to love Google Analytics 4 - yes, really! Encompassing new metrics, changes in how existing metrics are measured, report customisations, exploring data in-depth and integrations.
  • How to pitch to different people types and structuring proposals to ensure every group is emotionally invested.
  • Reaffirming the importance of accessibility in web development and how we can all do better with our content and markup. Including ensuring there is an easy and sensible navigation/page structure with relevant markup, ordering and skip options.
  • Useful tips and tricks when using Google Sheets for data management and reporting.
  • Don’t be sentimental about pages on your website. Update content if it’s appropriate however it’s ok to delete out of date/irrelevant content.
  • Make your social posts accessible. Add alt text to your social media post images - describe exactly what the image is and why the image is being used, don’t just stuff keywords into it. Screen readers struggle to read fancy fonts and emojis so keep to a minimum in social posts.

We hope to be back again soon

The event was really well organised and we highly recommended it for anyone agency or client-side that is involved in online marketing and content. We are looking forward to attending another BrightonSEO event in the future.
